The dome on your in-the-ear hearing aids can be easily removed, cleaned, reassembled, or replaced by you—eliminating the need to make costly appointments and trips to a hearing clinic.
In this article, we'll discuss:
- What is a dome?

- How to change the dome
What is a dome?
If you have an MDHearing in-the-ear hearing aid, the dome that came assembled on your hearing aid is a medium-size dome. If the medium size does not work for you, we also provide small and large sized domes in your MDHearing box.
Domes help you get a snug, comfortable fit. They also help protect in-the-ear (ITE) hearing aids from earwax and moisture.
When should the dome be replaced?
Just as with any hearing aid on the market, you should plan to perform routine maintenance on your in-the-ear hearing aids.
Domes are easy to change and should be replaced once per month. This will keep your hearing aid clean and working well for you. You should also replace your wax guards at the same time.
Why do I need to change the dome?
Your hearing aid domes are exposed to earwax, skin oils, sweat, and other debris, which can cause them to become brittle and worn out over time. Using a dome in poor condition will result decreased in hearing aid performance, specifically poor sound quality and volume.
Replacing your domes routinely will help keep your in-the-ear hearing aids working as they should to keep you hearing as well as possible.
How to change the dome
Note: This information can also be found in your user manual under the Replacing Parts section.
- To remove the dome, hold the hearing aid with one hand and pinch the dome with your other hand. Twist back and forth while pulling to remove.
- To attach a new dome, push the new dome over the ridge on the tip of the hearing aid.
IMPORTANT: Always verify the dome is pushed all the way on the hearing aid before inserting into your ear canal. Otherwise, the dome may detach from the aid when removing it from your ear.
